Is allotment gardening for me?
Before applying for an allotment plot, please take the time to read the following:
Allotments are subject to Government Legislation which dictates how allotments must be used and looked after.
Vacant plots are rarely weed free, and you must be prepared to spend many hours digging out stubborn weeds.
As well as being physically demanding, the time you need to commit to keeping a plot in good order will, depending on the crops grown, be on average, around 5 to 6 hours a week over the course of the year.
In addition to the time spent tending your plot, you will be expected to contribute to general site upkeep (through work parties).
The Company does not hire or loan out any gardening tools or equipment, you will therefore have to provide your own.
Good cultivation involves having crops planted or the ground cleared and weed-free ready for planting. Covering large areas of the plot with plastic or similar for long periods of time does not count as “cultivation”.
All new tenants are subject to a 12 month probationary period.
Once you have completed the sign up requirements and been given a gate key you will be expected to start cultivation straight away.
The purpose of having an allotment plot is to grow vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers.
You cannot use an allotment plot for any form of trade or business.
